Cultural interpretation

From AI-driven digital characters and immersive VR journeys to projection-led installations and interactive environments, we design experiences intended to be explored, experienced and remembered.

Our work transforms stories, ideas, collections and brands into emotionally engaging experiences using realtime technology, interactive media and cinematic digital storytelling.

We create cinematic realtime worlds for museums, exhibitions, public spaces and live experiences; blending atmosphere, storytelling and emerging technology through immersive 3D design.

IMITO is a London-based immersive studio specialising in extended reality, realtime environments and interactive experiences for museums, cultural organisations, exhibitions and public audiences. Our projects combine cinematic design, deep research and emerging technologies to transform how people experience stories, spaces and ideas - from the past and present to imagined futures.

From AI-driven avatar characters and virtual worlds to projection experiences, digital installations and immersive public environments, we create work that blends technology with atmosphere, emotion and human connection. Using realtime 3D tools, interactive systems and cinematic storytelling techniques, we design experiences intended not simply to be viewed, but genuinely experienced.

Our Work

Each of our projects begin with a single interpretive question.

"How do we tell this story with the best possible user experience?"

HMS Wellington - Central London

Recreating WW2's Atlantic Convoys in Immersive VR

The HMS Wellington VR Experience, developed by IMITO, was an immersive historical VR experience developed and operated by IMITO. The VR experience allowed visitors onboard HMS Wellington to experience the history of one of Britain’s most significant surviving Second World War ships. Combining cutting-edge virtual reality technology with carefully researched historical interpretation, the experience let audiences step inside the world of the crew, explore detailed environments, and encounter moments inspired by the ship’s wartime service and legacy.

Alongside the creative and technical development, this project demonstrated IMITO’s wider approach to immersive work: combining storytelling, public engagement and emerging technology to create meaningful cultural experiences.

HMS Wellington VR has since become a strong example of how immersive media can help museums and heritage sites reinterpret collections in ways that feel contemporary, memorable and emotionally engaging for modern audiences.

"It was an awesome experience that really allowed you to feel what it was like at the time. I would definitely recommend to a friend."

Rick Niewland, Visitor @ HMS Wellington Immersive VR Experience

"The VR was extremely well produced and felt very cinematic. I was truly immersed in the world, and didn't want to take the headset off."

Ian McAffer, Visitor @ HMS Wellington Immersive VR Experience

Bringing the voices of Roman Chester back to life

University of Chester

IMITO is currently collaborating with the University of Chester on the development of an innovative immersive virtual reality experience inspired by Chester’s iconic Roman amphitheatre. The project has received public funding by the National Lottery through Arts Council England.

Built using Unreal Engine and realtime immersive technologies, the experience reimagines Roman Deva Victrix as an interactive virtual world populated by historically informed AI-driven characters shaped through archaeological and historical research. Designed for museums, schools and public audiences, the project combines immersive storytelling, conversational interaction and digital interpretation to create more engaging and accessible ways to explore the history of Roman Chester.
